Interracial Baseball Games: 1948

The 1948 season was the final season for the Negro National League. Integration was continuing, albeit slowly, and interracial barnstorming (and, honestly, barnstorming in general) was losing some of its drawing power. Part of this was because in October of 1948, the two most prominent interracial barnstormers of recent seasons, Bob Feller and Satchel Paige, were pre-occupied as teammates helping to win a World Series for the Cleveland Indians.

Retrosheet has box scores for six games played between a team of Major League All-Stars (MLS) and the Kansas City Royals (KCR), a barnstorming team which included several members of the Kansas City Monarchs, in southern California in late October and early November 1948. One somewhat stark example of the changing times was the lineup for the Major League All-Stars in the October 31st game. Batting second and playing second base for the Major League All-Stars (i.e., the "white" team in this interracial matchup) was major-league second baseman Jackie Robinson.

Play-by-play accounts have been deduced for these six games based on newspaper game stories and box scores.
