In the summer of 1913, the consensus best baseball team in the East, the New York Lincoln Giants (NYL), and the consensus best baseball team in the West, the Chicago American Giants (CAG), faced off a total of 14 times over two months for the right to call themselves the best team in baseball.
The series got off to a rough start. The first scheduled game was called off because of a dispute over which team was going to use pitcher Frank Wickware who had apparently agreed to play for both teams. Another game was canceled five days later over a dispute over whether the Lincoln Giants could add outfielder Charles Earle from the Brooklyn Royal Giants to substitute for one of their outfielders, Judy Gans, who was ill.
After four games in New York, the series finished with ten games in Chicago spread out across three weeks. When all was said and done, the Lincoln Giants won 8 of the 14 games played (with one tie).
