The Negro National League began play in 1920. In 1923, they were joined by the Eastern Colored League. The two leagues agreed to meet in a best-of-nine Negro League World Series following the 1924 season. The inaugural Negro League World Series pitted the Kansas City Monarchs (KCM) of the NNL against the Hilldale Club (HIL) of the ECL.
