Original Regular Season Schedules

The schedule files contain the originally planned schedules for each major league season from 1877-2009. Schedules were obtained from different sources, such as The Sporting News Baseball Guide and the New York Times. Occasionally there were disagreements between these sources which were then subjected to careful research. The basic format is parallel to that of the Retrosheet Game Logs, but there are many fewer fields. There are 12 fields in each record, described in more detail in the Guide to original regular season schedules.

Paul Rivard did the initial work for these files with some intense research during a one year period and he generously donated his work to Retrosheet so that the information can be shared more widely. All schedules were carefully proofed, with a very large number of seasons being checked by Dave Lamoureaux and Jim Herdman. In addition, Cliff Blau, Sheldon Miller, Jon Rickert, Gary Pearce, Jim Wohlenhaus, and Dave Smith contributed to the proofing process, as did Paul Rivard.

When the first schedules were posted on this page, we had not been able to obtain the information for the 1876-1879 NL, nor the 1882 American Association. Thanks to diligent work by Walter LeConte and his wife Kathy in 2008, we now have all of these schedules, rigorously proofed, except the 1876 NL. We are grateful to Walter and Kathy for this painstaking work and hopefully the 1876 data will surface eventually. In addition to the basic information about each game, there are two other types of data of note. The first is that Frank Vaccaro has generously agreed to donate his information on games that were postponed, usually due to rain. At present this rainout information is presented only for the 1960 season as a small demonstration, but work will continue to complete these entries as well. The ultimate goal is to have a notation for each game indicating whether it was played as scheduled or not, and to describe the reason if it were not played, with information on rescheduled dates when possible.

The second type of special information is some notes from Paul Rivard concerning special situations, either in late schedule changes or large disagreements between sources. For example, the Braves moved from Boston to Milwaukee only a few weeks before the start of the 1953 season and there were significant consequences to the schedule as a result.
